Editorial Fees

Your project has its own needs and expectations that deserve to be met. I'm here to assess the state of your writing fairly to help determine which service would be best suited for your work. I offer four main services, which are as follows:

  • Editorial Assessment

  • Proofreading

  • Copy Editing

  • Developmental Editing

I use standard editorial rates set by the Editorial Freelancers Association in accordance with my experience level.

Note: I do not offer formatting services at this time, but have skilled, reliable contacts I am happy to refer you to.

Service Descriptions

Let's start at the beginning. An editorial assessment is a two-page review of each aspect of your manuscript. In fiction, this encompasses plot, character development, organization, style, and any big-picture elements worth noting. In nonfiction, this service includes fact-checking, organization, style, and an assessment of logical sense. If you are looking for overall feedback on your manuscript and aren't ready for the commitment of a full developmental edit, an editorial assessment would be your best option.

For an editorial assessment I charge
$300.

The next service I offer is proofreading. Proofreading is the process of catching last-minute errors before your manuscript or sales copy is ready to be formatted. With this service, it is expected that your writing at this state is very clean with just a few minor errors. The focus will be on catching errors that were introduced or missed during the copy editing stage. If the writing clearly needs more work, it will be recommended to be copy edited instead.

For a fiction proofread I charge $0.014.

For a nonfiction proofread I charge $0.021.

Copy editing is a detailed, meticulous service that focuses on the manuscript or sales copy's cohesion, grammar and punctuation, and accuracy. This service comes highly recommended for any manuscript that needs careful revision and readability sharpening.

For a fiction copy edit I charge $0.021.
For a nonfiction copy edit I charge $0.030.

Finally, I offer a developmental edit, the most comprehensive, big-picture overview of your book manuscript. At this stage, your manuscript should be in its first or second draft, and unlike the copy editing or proofreading service, developmental is not aimed to check for small errors like punctuation, grammar, and spelling. Areas of concern include plot, character development, flow, sense, and message. Minor restructuring and rewriting are viable options within this service, if necessary. I will also gauge your manuscript from a marketability lens with potential audience in mind.

For a fiction developmental edit I charge $0.024.

For a nonfiction developmental edit I charge $0.039.
